The Bands

The Program

All students enrolled in the Instrumental Music Program at CMHS participate in the Concert Band, Marching Band and Pep Band. The Jazz Band is offered before school, and is optional for those students interested in experiencing jazz music.

Concert Band

The Concert Band rehearses during 1st hour from mid-October until the end of the school year. It is the main focus area of the C-M Band Program. Students are exposed to many different genres of literature, from early musical periods to contemporary.

The concert band performs annually at home concerts, including a fall and spring program, plus a Parade of Bands concert. The Parade of Bands concert features all school bands from 5th to 12th grade. Another event on the calendar each year is State Large Group Festival.

In the spring semester, concert band members have the opportunity to work on chamber music for State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Students play in woodwind, brass or percussion choirs, plus many also prepare solos and/or small groups.

The concert band has also performed at Music Festivals on our major trips.

Marching Band

The Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawk Marching Band is a fun group that is active in several events throughout the state each year.

Performances in the fall include home football games, homecoming parade, and couple of marching festivals as well. State Marching Festival is also an annual event for the Tigerhawk Marching Band.

In the spring, the marching band also enjoys participating in the Pella Tulip Time Parade and the Memorial Day Service and Parade in Colfax. During the summer, the band has a few practices and also performs in the Jasper County Fair 4H Parade, in Colfax.

The marching band also has performed in parades on our major trips.

Jazz Band

The C-M Jazz Band is a fun group that performs music of the many different styles of jazz: swing, latin (bossa, samba, salsa, afro-cuban, etc.), rock, funk, and also some of the beautiful ballads. It is a creative outlet for students wishing to learn challenging music and also maybe doing some improvising.

Throughout the year, the Jazz Band performs annually at the SCIBA Jazz Festival and various other festivals across the state. Rehearsals begin in mid-October and are before school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, each week. Additional sectionals are also required to learn music.

The jazz band sometimes performs on major trips taken by the Music Department. Home performances include 3 concerts, several local events, and some years the group takes an abbreviated jazz tour in May.

Pep Band

The pep band performs for several events throughout the year, mainly during home basketball games in the fall and early spring. Songs include fun classic rock tunes to the present.
